The area around Lake Akan, where Kamuy Lumina is held, is an area of untouched and vast nature. The Lake Akan area is a popular spot with tourists every day. But you can get a taste of the beautiful nature with just a short distance away from the center of the area.

Taking a leisurely stroll, savoring the air, and admiring the scenery in the midst of nature without the noise and crowds is the "premium time" that makes this area a perfect place to visit. This week, we will introduce you to some spots where you can spend some time in a quiet place to do nothing but wander around the lake Akan area.

Hear the sound of nature at lake Onneto

About 20 minutes drive from Lake Akan, you can reach another beautiful lake. Its name is Lake Onneto. “Onne” means "old" and “To” means "swamp or lake" in Ainu language. In fall, the area is well known for its beauty of red autumn leaves. It is also famous as a lake without signal among the locals.

If you visit on a windless day, you can enjoy beautiful riffling scenery all around. In autumn, the coniferous trees at the foot of Mt. Meakan, one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan, turns into a golden yellow color forest.

Stopping along the lakeshore while looking at the forest on the other side of the shore and enjoying the sound of the trees and leaves blowing in the rustling wind is another exceptional experience.

Entering the far side of Lake Onneto, you will find a campsite. If you go to the lakeside side of the campsite, you will find a place where you can enjoy a wonderful sunset view!

At the end of October, the sunset time is much earlier. During the early season, the sun sometimes goes down after 3:00 p.m., so please be careful of the time if you want to watch the sunset in the forest!

Enjoying the great outdoors with all your senses is a unique traveling style of East Hokkaido, especially the Lake Akan area. In particular, Lake Onneto, where you can enjoy the tranquility of the lake while being surrounded by spectacular scenery, is a place where you will find yourself staying for a long time.

However, daytime temperatures are expected to drop considerably from now on, so we recommend that everyone come prepared with warm clothes, scarves, and knit hats!

Enjoy a special hot spring after a lake walk!

Before reaching Lake Onneto, there is an accommodation facility called Nonaka Onsen that also offers day-trip hot springs. The onsen is located at the foot of Mt. Meakan. Just walking around the facility, you can smell the sulfur in the air.

The interior design of the hot spring is very unique and relaxing, which can be felt from the construction of the indoor bath. The temperature is set higher than that of most hot springs, which may be very welcome to hot spring enthusiasts!

If you think that the indoor bath is too hot, try the open-air bath outside! The discolored rocks give you a glimpse of how strong the volcanic power of Mt. Meakan is.

Another symbol of Nonaka Onsen is the cat's paw mark! The owner of the accommodation is a big cat lover and has taken in several stray cats! Cute cats may welcome you when you visit this onsen!

In this episode we introduced you, Lake Onneto, a beautiful lake near Lake Akan, where you can take your time to enjoy the scenery and feel the great nature with all your senses! In our next episode, we will return to the Lake Akan area and show you a spot where you can heal in the cold with a footbath!
