Today, along Lake Akan, where temperatures are reaching below 0 degrees celcius, it's beginning to look a lot more like winter.

The days are quiet and peaceful as it is not the high season of the area. Mt. Akan, which stands on the west side of Lake Akan, is covered in snow and appears to be well into winter.

With winter just around the corner, we would like to introduce you to a unique way to enjoy walking through the forest on the Bokke walking trail, which we have introduced several times on this webpage.

Enjoy walking through the forest while feeling the changes in the air from autumn to winter in nature using your senses.

Winter bokke

As introduced in the summer article, the name of the promenade, "Bokke," originally comes from the Ainu word for "boiling place," meaning a geological phenomenon called a "mud volcano."

If you enter from the entrance on the Ecomuseum Center side and walk straight for about 15 minutes, you will see its true nature. You can't help but stare at the simmering mud making a sloshing noise. It's a place where you can feel the energy of the motherearth, as when you look at what you thought is a small burst, you hear a huge explosion.

During the winter, gases and steam appear thicker and whiter than in the summer, allowing you to visually feel the heat of the Earth. Be sure to shoot with your camera and capture the moment the mud explodes!

There are places around Bokke where only hot water and volcanic gas are spewed out, and because the ground is warm, even if it snows during the winter, it hardly accumulates. It's natural road heating using geothermal heat.
