Is the mid of July! Summer here in Hokkaido finally starts and surely is the best season to play outside. Many of you may be thinking of going somewhere cooler this summer in Japan.

The "Kamuy Lumina" event is held at Lake Akan area inside the Akan-Mashu National Park, located in eastern Hokkaido. An hour drive from Kushiro city where it is surrounded by rich nature and stunning scenery. Also it is well known as one of the coolest spots in summer among Japan, making it the perfect summer resort where you can feel the cool air in the morning and evening.

We would like to share with you how you can experience the world of "Kamuy Lumina," a night walk event in the Lake Akan forest!

What is "Kamuy Lumina"?

"Kamuy Lumina" is a night walk event held in the forest at Lake Akan. During the daytime, you can enjoy a nice nature trail walking here. At night the whole area will switch into a digital art zone! You can enjoy the beautiful digital artworks created by Moment Factory while having a night adventure inside the forest.

The story of "Kamuy Lumina" is based on the folklore of the Ainu people, the indigenous peoples who have lived around Lake Akan for a long time. Get a close look to see how the Ainu people have built a relationship with nature and it may remind us what is important for our living nowadays.

Walk in the world of "Kamuy Lumina"

Before entering the "Kamuy Lumina", our staff will explain about the story and precautions.

Watch out for your steps! "Kamuy Lumina" is held in a truly deep forest. With the "Rhythm Stick" in your hand, illuminating the dark forest at night, you are now ready to enter the world of "Kamuy Lumina". You can enjoy the melodies of “Yukara” (Ainu epic poems) with traditional ainu instruments mukkuri and tonkori from the rhythm stick throughout the event.

You will first meet an owl that greets you at the entrance of the forest. They are named as "Kotankorokamuy" in Ainu language,which means "the guardian god of the village". It navigates us through the world of "Kamuy Lumina".

The Ainu people believe that kamuy (gods) reside in nature and things that support them in their daily lives. Building a fair relationship with the kamuy and be grateful for the blessings they have been given.
However, one day the human world suffered from starvation, and to get over this crisis, an envoy was sent to Kamuy's world....

Ticket information

Where can I buy tickets? How is the opening time?
Tickets are available at the official website, hotels around Lake Akan, "Kamuy Lumina" Ticket Booth, and designated travel agencies.

Fees: Adults (junior high school students and older) 3000 yen / 3500 yen
   Child (elementary school student) 1500 yen / 1700 yen
 Preschool children or below are free of charge.

Starting time changes depending on the sunset time. So be sure to check when planning your trip!
