Enjoy the great food and ingredients of Akan!
On the opposite side of the Akan International Crane Center, which we introduced in the previous article, you will find "Roadside Station Akan Tancho no Sato," which sells many of Akan's agricultural products!
Many public facilities in Akan are named after “Tancho '' which means red-crowned cranes, and from this you can sense that they are loved by the locals.
This cozy roadside station sells souvenirs of Kushiro and Akan as well as delicious foods such as grilled corn and red-crowned crane ice cream.
The red-crowned crane ice cream with Kushiro's paprika sauce is very tasty and refreshingly sweet!
There is a local vegetable section on the left hand side of the roadside station.
Cucumbers and tomatoes are so fresh that once you start eating them, you just cannot stop!
If you plan to enjoy camping nearby, we recommend that you purchase your food here.
Right next to the roadside station there is Akan Marche, which mainly sells processed products of Akan.
Not only vegetables and fruits, Akan also offers delicious meat!
In particular, "Akan Momiji" is a processed venison product unique to Akan.
Just pan fry the venison, which is soaked in a flavorful Japanese sauce, and you have a delicious meal! Take a try!
Know more about the history of Akan in an old train station!
Until the 1970s, the Akan area actually had a thriving coal mining industry and many people lived there.
However, as time went by, the coal mine, Yubetsu Kohzan, was closed.
In 1988, the Yuzuru Station was built to tell the half-century history of the Yubetsu Coal Mine and the Yubetsu Railway.
It introduces people's living through photos and tools from the old days.
Look at the roof! There was also a red-crowned crane!
In fact, if you look closely to the sign at the entrance, you will see two cranes welcoming you!
The exhibit includes tools and safety equipment used in coal mining, as well as a lot of information and items related to the railway that transports not only coal, but also residents and workers.
The handwritten timetable is just amazing, which is hard to find nowadays.
The fact that there were seven trains a day also gives a glimpse of the scale of the town.
In the old days, there were also a movie theater and nightclubs around the mines.
If you go around to the back of the museum, you will see a steam locomotive train that used to run on the coal mine railroad!
It is exciting to see it from a close distance!
This C1165 steam locomotive train was built in 1935 and mainly carried coal from the Yubetsu Coal Mine to downtown Kushiro.
The train was built about 90 years ago, and you can sense its age from its exterior.
And the most attractive part is that you can enter the train's cockpit.
The design of the speedometer is quite cool!
It is very enjoyable to know more about the history of the area by touching these objects related to daily life in the past!
Although trains no longer run in the Akan area today, it may be interesting to recall life in the old days by looking at the train and photos from those days!
In this article, we have introduced you to Akan Tancho no Sato, a roadside station that sells specialty products of Akan!
It is a place where you can take a break during a long drive to enjoy delicious food and learn about the history of the town, so be sure to stop by!
Next time, we will introduce you to a fantastic ice cream and gelato shop using rich milk, Akkan Bay! Stay tuned!
